Are you sure you need all these papers? |

I'm the only ornament this tree needs... |
We don’t have as many holiday decorations up this year as usual, partly because I don’t have the energy or desire to decorate the house from top to bottom (I’m wearing shorts and sweating and that’s just not conducive to putting up holly and evergreens), and partly because Prudy thinks we put up the Christmas tree for her private and exclusive use. She treats it like a jungle gym, and climbs to the top daily (not unlike her sister)—and this is without ornaments and lights. So we won’t be displaying our fancy (breakable) ornaments this year or putting the tasseled runner on the mantel (I’m sure she’d pull it and everything else down on top of her). But it’s all good. We’re expecting a cold front, Nick will be home for winter break, and I’m planning a little personal stay-cation from the usual routine after Christmas.

Too much.
My spring break wasn’t really a vacation—my son had already
had his school break and we didn’t go anywhere, but I recognized that I needed
a break from blogging and took one. I didn’t try to fill the days—in fact, I
tried to empty them! But life, as usual, got in the way. While I was “taking a
break,” Scout had some problems and had to go to the vet (she’s feeling better
now) and we helped my son complete a community service project which involved
making 1000 peanut butter and jelly
sandwiches to be distributed to the hungry and homeless. This is what 1000
sandwiches looks like:
So much of life is made up of the little things, the simple
pleasures and everyday adventures that form the main part of our existence. If
we can take pleasure in those little things (instead of waiting for some
distant “big thing”), we’ll find our day-to-day lives that much happier. Here
are five little things making me happy right now:
Saturday, my husband left half his chicken parmesan sandwich for me on the kitchen counter. When I came into the kitchen, the paper plate was on the floor, the meat portion of the sandwich was gone and my 12-year-old Jack Russell Terrier, who spends most of her time sleeping, was licking the tile.
This is the kitchen counter (it's not usually so clean).
This is the dog.
She usually looks like this:
Do you think she’s just lulling our suspicions?
