The World's Most Expensive Salad

February 10, 2012

Behold the harvest:

This is why gardening and I are not the best of friends. I start off all filled with ambition and plans for delicious homegrown produce, and this is what I get:

Even though I love the feeling of picking vegetables and herbs from my own plants (a genuine simple pleasure), I am really not the world’s best gardener, and I think my time and money would be better spent by participating in a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) group. I’d like to think I have a green thumb, but the results prove otherwise.

Maybe I’ll stick to orchids.

Is there anything you would love to do better?

  1. I am so optimistic in the spring when I see all the flowers to buy--thinking of all the lovely containers to set on my porch, but then they only look good for the first few weeks. The bugs always eat my petunias and then I get really discouraged. I've given up on vegetables as I do not have a green thumb. But for those first few weeks I am always hopeful and think this year is going to be different--I'm going to be So dedicated to my plants... Maybe this year? :)

  2. I'm always optimistic, too. I finally learned that if I don't SEE the plants on a daily basis, they will die. At least if I see them, I notice if they start to droop or get eaten by bugs. I love a beautiful garden, but I just don't seem to have the wherewithal to grow one myself. Oh, well, maybe someday!

  3. I don't even try here anymore. The last time the critters ate my tomatoes right done to the ground even though I had the plants in pots with chicken wire covering the tops and sides. I would love to have the fresh produce but it doesn't work for me. I really wonder how the settlers managed to avoid starvation.

  4. I'm glad I'm not the only one who has so much trouble with veggies! And I would undoubtedly have starved if I had to grow all my own food. I guess someone has to keep the farmers in business.
