Make Me Laugh

July 26, 2010

I love to laugh. Who doesn’t? What makes me laugh might not be what makes you laugh, but that’s one of the things that keeps the world interesting. I love older authors like P.G. Wodehouse, James Thurber, and Jean Kerr as well as contemporary writers Dave Barry, Bill Bryson, Celia Rivenbark and David Sedaris to name only a few. There’s a whole world of funny bloggers out there for your quick fix of daily humor, too.

Here are a couple of the things that have made me laugh lately. Hopefully you’ll find these funny, too:

This blog post from Rocks in My Dryer.

Just about any post at all from CrazyAuntPurl.

Bill Bryson’s book I’m a Stranger Here Myself. If Mr. Bryson doesn’t make you laugh at least once, I’m afraid we can no longer be friends.

Brian Regan’s Live CD. Brian is a G-rated stand-up comedian. My family constantly quotes lines from the two CDs (Live and I Walked on the Moon) we play on every road trip. Look him up on YouTube for a taste—one of my favorite routines is “Stupid in School.”

What makes you laugh? Please share it with me—I'm always looking for some new funny.  I'd rather laugh than cry, wouldn't you?

  1. Check out Jeff Dunham. He's a stand up comedian with puppets and some of his skits are hysterical, but probably not G rated. More like PG-18!

  2. We like Jeff Dunham, too-but you're right--definitely PG-18. (We listened to Achmed the Dead Terrorist on the way back from Georgia: "Silence. I keel you.")

  3. I'm a huge David Sedaris fan. And for stand-up, I do like John Oliver and Jim Gaffigan. Oh, and I introduced my husband to Margaret Cho. (*Definitely* not for watching around your boys, I'm thinking.)

Laughter is, if not the best medicine, an important component to a full and joyful life. I'll have to check out those recommendations, Kathy. Looking forward to a few new sources of the giggles... :)

  4. What makes me laugh more often than anything else are the conversations my best friend and I have. It's the kind of friendship where we're both completely comfortable with each other and feel free to say anything. And boy, do we ever! There's been times I've laughed until I cried.... and just thinking of some of the crazy things we've done and said makes me laugh all over again :-)

  5. What makes me laugh? Sadly or happily almost anything as long as it's not cruel or an -sim (racism, sexism, etc). I love stupid humor like Will Ferrell, 30Rock, the Office, all things Saturday Night Live. Anne Lamott, David Sedaris. Dry, edgy, ironic, ridiculous. I love sitcoms, every stupid one there is, Golden Girls etc. My daughter says I laugh at everything even though "it's not funny" well humor is in the eye of the beholder!!!

  6. Meredith--I just discovered Jim Gaffigan thanks to one of my son's friends. Hilarious! I'll have to look up John Oliver. Don't you think it must take some serious guts to get up in front of people with the express purpose of making them laugh? Talk about pressure!

  7. Teresa--one of my absolute favorite things is laughing with my husband. We don't always find the same things funny, but when we do, we both laugh till we cry. It's a great feeling. It's so awesome to have friends to share a laugh with...one of the best simple pleasures.

KJ I've been laughing my butt off in training. I have to say it is much better than crying. Hope you feel as well as I do...

  10. Hey, girl--hope you're enjoying training, not suffering through it...in other words, you're laughing because it's fun rather than laughing so that you DON'T cry!

  15. Pets are great for entertainment, aren't they? Our Jack Russell Terrier thinks she's a doberman and never met a balloon she didn't want to destroy. (I won't tell anyone about the tickles...)
